Surrounded by the family he loved, Hugo Wall left this Earth on April 13, 2017. He leaves behind countless cherished memories and is dearly missed by his wife of 53 years, Monika Wall. Hugo is forever in the hearts of his children, Enoch Wall of Northern California, and Esther Wall of Ontario, Canada.
Hugo was predeceased by his parents, Lilli Zweygardt and Waldemar Wall, and followed in death by his dear brother, Egon Wall of Germany, in 2018.
Born in 1935 in a small German-speaking farming community near the Black Sea in Ukraine, Hugo experienced a life shaped by resilience and faith. As World War II ended, Hugo’s family, like many others, fled the area with little more than horses and buggies, leaving behind their prosperous farm. During their journey, tragedy struck, and Hugo and Egon lost their father. The family eventually resettled in southern Germany, where their ancestors had originated generations earlier.
Despite the hardships of displacement and limited resources, Hugo became a successful electrical apprentice and secured a stable job. In 1964, he married Monika, and together they pursued dreams of adventure and a new life. Their journey brought them across the Atlantic, where they lived in upstate New York and Ontario before settling in Kitchener. There, they raised their children before moving to Port Elgin to enjoy retirement on the shores of Lake Huron, where Hugo found joy in water skiing, fishing, and boating. In his later years, he built a quiet life in the Greater Toronto Area, in a house he constructed himself, savoring long walks, music, and books.
Hugo’s deep faith guided him throughout his life, instilling strength and optimism. He was a steadfast provider, offering spiritual and financial support to family and friends. Hugo embodied the spirit of the immigrant who worked tirelessly to create a better life, leaving a legacy of love, perseverance, and faith.
Hugo will be dearly missed, but we find comfort in knowing his faith has led him home. A private graveside service was held on Easter weekend, 2017, honoring his life and the profound impact he made on those around him.
