It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Tato, Dido and Pra-Dido, Iwan, who passed away suddenly in his 94th year.He will be sadly missed by his daughters, Maria, Doris (Daniel) and Irene (Jerry), his grandchildren, Melanie (Garfield) and Andrew, and his great-granddaughter, Julianna.He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Anna Chromej who passed away in 2002.Iwan was born in the Halychyna Region of Ukraine where he spent his youth working on farms and in a bakery. When WWII broke out, he was one of thousands of young people taken by the Germans to work as forced labour in the factories in Germany.Iwan came to Canada through the United Nations Relief Plan in 1948 to work in the Aluminum Factories of Northern Quebec. He moved his family to Oshawa in 1951 and worked in construction briefly before being hired on at General Motors where he worked for 32 years.Iwan was a self-educated man who loved reading. He was also a long-time member and supporter of St. George the Great Martyr Ukrainian Catholic Church and Dnipro Cultural Centre in Oshawa. His other passion was gardening, and every year he tended his bountiful vegetable garden.Iwan loved spending time with his family, and will be greatly missed. “Vichnaya Pamyat”Resting at the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME, 124 King St East, Oshawa on Thursday, January 8th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., with Panachyda at 7:30 p.m.Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial will be Friday, January 9th at 11:00 a.m. at ST. GEORGE THE GREAT MARTYR UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. Interment to follow at Sts. Wolodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations in Iwan’s memory to St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church or The Taras Shevchenko Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
