January 23, 1952 - May 4, 2024

It is with deep sadness that Stephen’s family shares the news of his sudden but peaceful passing on May 4, 2024, in his 73rd year, at home in Pickering, Ontario.

Stephen was born in Toronto to Eva (nee Smith) and the late Charlie Mooney on January 23, 1952.

Stephen is survived by his loving wife Cheryl, who has helped him navigate the journey living with Alzheimer’s these past several years. Officially diagnosed only just over a year ago, Stephen still remembered everyone and loved to be surrounded by his beloved grandchildren whenever possible. He is survived by his son Ryan (Jessica), daughters Crystal (Steve) and Julia (Scott) and his cherished grandchildren Hannah, Sasha, Jack, Charlie, Samantha and Silas.

He is also survived by his wonderful mother Eva and sister Brenda (Dave), his mother-in-law Sue Coverley, brother-in-law Wayne (Mary) Coverley, sister-in-law Dianne Coverley and nieces and nephews Jeff (Brittni), Dana, Carly, Angela, Jennifer (Tyler), Greg, Claire (David), Catherine (Dan), Michael and Annie, and grand-nieces and nephews, Anthony, Mitchell, Chloe, Holly, Evie, Emma, Nora and Lincoln.

Along with his father Charlie, Stephen was predeceased by his brother Kenny (Donna), brother-in-law Ernie, father-in-law Ken Coverley, stepfather Ken Falconbridge, and granddaughter Rosie.

An integral part of his life over the years, Stephen loved keeping in touch over the years with his grandparents(†), extended family and friends throughout Ontario, Alberta and BC and cherished his moments with them.

Professionally, Stephen was a proud Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Camdec for many years, and later with Right at Home Realty. He loved recounting some of his favourite deals over the years - the assemblage of lots for larger deals in Scarborough was a favourite feat - and his repeat clients were a source of pride and comfort. He truly loved helping others to achieve their home ownership dreams.

His many awards throughout the 80s and 90s were not as important to him as the joy that the colouring contests he ran or canvassing his neighbourhoods and meeting new people brought him. Stephen lived an interesting life, having survived many escapades in Scarborough and surrounding cottage areas during his youth, including being saved from drowning as a young boy and memorable dangerous quarry adventures with his brother.

He grew up in the Dorset Park area, attending Sir Winston Churchill CI where he made many lifelong friendships, and met the love of his life, Cheryl Coverley.

He was proud of the painting company he started during his late teenage years, advertising and organizing fellow students to paint homes in the Scarborough area. He and Cheryl were the first couple to be married on the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto, where he had started to attend university. They would then move to Vancouver Island, BC, where they purchased their first home near Duncan and would have their first two children, Crystal and Ryan.

Followed there by his own father, stepmother and his Grandmother, they enjoyed many years on the island. Later, they moved back to Ontario where Julia was born and enjoyed living close to his mother, inlaws and his beloved siblings, brother Kenny and sister Brenda, and his many nieces and nephews, with his father following him back a few years later. He was a proud hockey dad to Ryan and Julia and enjoyed taking them to their numerous games and tournaments.

He also fostered a love of animals and travel in his children, with numerous adventures out west and on trips to Florida and the southern states. His faithful companion Nelly already awaits new adventures with him on the other side.

Throughout the years, his love of being on the lake, fishing or just hanging out with family or friends brought him the most joy. In the end, family was his priority and he was so proud of all of his children and grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed every day.

His family would like to thank the Alzheimer Society music project for providing a playlist of Stephen’s favourite music, and especially the fantastic care workers and staff at Community Care Durham for their support in his last few months. Their kindness, compassion and support are so appreciated and we are so grateful that they were there to support Cheryl and Stephen in his final months.

Please join us at THE SIMPLE ALTERNATIVE - PICKERING from 2-4pm (service at 3pm), Saturday, May 11th to celebrate Stephen’s life and share your memories of him with his family. Reception to follow at The Portly Piper (235 Bayly St. W., Ajax).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or Community Care Durham would be gratefully acknowledged.
