June 18, 1947 - October 28, 2022
After a 25-year struggle with Breast Cancer, Nancy passed away peacefully on October 28, 2022 at Oak Ridges Hospice of Durham.
Nancy was surrounded with love from her husband, David, daughter Dana (Dignard), son in law Dan, grandson Mathieu and granddaughter Cassia.
Nancy was predeceased by her son Jeffrey, her parents Bruce and Hilda Powell.
In her youth Nancy played baseball for Sunnyside Park and was captain of the Donevan Collegiate cheerleading squad. In adult life, Nancy took up swimming and became an instructor and Red Cross examiner.
She also was an assistant coach for the Oshawa Kiwanis Synchronized Swim team when her daughter competed.
Nancy went back to school and became a law clerk, working for a local firm for over 20 years.
She really enjoyed her time with the girls at Book Club and playing golf in the Sunnybrae ladies golf league. Many ski trips were taken to Western Canada and the US with her husband David.
To say Nancy was an animal lover is an understatement, especially fond of her kittens Porky, Topflite, Nightflite and Smudge and of course her grandpuppy Aspen.
Much of her summertime was spent enjoying the sunsets at the family cottage on Kennisis Lake, Haliburton.
Nana was a Mama Bear and loved her children and grandchildren fiercely.
She will be missed!
A special thanks to the Oak Ridges Hospice and all their staff (Amy, Brook, Ola and Robert).
Also, to the Lakeridge Health Cancer Clinic and Staff, Dr. Koneru (nurse Sue), Dr. Huang (nurse Irene) and Dr. Chandoke (nurse Cindy).
There will be a private family internment and a Celebration of Life at a later date.
In Nancy’s memory donations may be made to Oak Ridges Hospice, CIBC Breast Cancer Run for the Cure (team Nana are we there yet?) and the JDRF.

On October 12th, at age 90, Nancy passed away peacefully in her sleep after a long life, well-lived.
She was the cherished daughter of John and Lorraine (nee Tod) Burns….the beloved wife of Bob Miller for 67 years….the devoted mom for Ann, Jim and John Miller and mother-in-law to Kim Miller (Jim’s wife) and Tiffany Punnett (John’s wife)….the loving grandmother to Thomas, Cameron and Evan Miller….and the adored sister of Diana Devoll (nee Miller).
Born in Oshawa, May 20, 1932, Nancy grew up in a loving household on 62 Connaught St.
After attending University of Toronto, she began a career in Physiotherapy, and shortly thereafter, married Bob and settled into a vibrant and ever-changing life.
In the course of raising her three children, she always found time to give to others, her community while still engaging in her own passions.
From gardening at the Solina farmhouse, attending opera in Toronto, continuing her studies at U of T, spending family time at the Mountain Lake cottage or just relaxing with her cherished newspaper on Saturday mornings, she was always active.
Involved in many aspects of the community, her service included extensive volunteer work at St George’s Church, McLaughlin Art Gallery, LACAC and decades of Durham Meals on Wheels deliveries.
But it was with all whom she encountered, where maybe she made her biggest and longest lasting impact.
Always positive and engaged, friends and strangers alike were touched by her deep and genuine interest in them.
While Nancy will be dearly missed by her family and many friends, her legacy of kindness and respect will live within all for years to come.
