May 9, 1935 – November 17, 2024

Elizabeth (Betty) Van Hezewyk (nee Vonk) passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024, at the age of 89, surrounded by the love and comfort of her children. Predeceased in 2016 by Gerry, her beloved husband of 59 years, Betty was the proud mother of Jane (Don Campbell), John, Mary (Peter Menzies), Marg (Mark Lacy), Gerry (Cecilia Latorre), and Peter (Jennifer). She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and as a cherished “Oma” and “Special Oma” to many.

Betty immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands at the age of 15, bringing her resilience and strong work ethic. Over the years, she dedicated herself to her family, her community, and her faith. As a volunteer, Betty contributed to many organizations, including the Pickering Boy Scouts, the Rose of Durham, and St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. Her dedication was recognized in 1996 when she received the Pope John Paul II Medal for Volunteer Service.

In retirement, Betty enjoyed extensive travel, reading, and family gatherings where her famous meatball soup was a highlight. Her family remembers her as a loving matriarch and community organizer who lived with purpose and heart. Rest easy, Mom. There’s nothing left to organize. We’ve got it from here.

Visitation will be held at Oshawa Funeral Home, 847 King Street West, Oshawa, on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 10:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist Parish, 903 Giffard Street, Whitby. Interment will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Whitby.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory may be made to The Rose of Durham or The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.

Messages of condolence and shared memories can be left for the family by visiting Mount Lawn Funeral Home.

"What an amazing person your mother, Betty, was, Marg! Eileen just shared her obituary with us, and I’m so impressed with her lifetime of hard work, enthusiasm, organisational skills, kindness, and vim and vigour. On behalf of your O’Driscoll cousins in Ireland, may I convey our heartfelt sympathy to you and Mark and to all Betty’s friends who will miss her dearly."

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Lynne Marie Hume at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga following a brief illness. Lynne was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, whose presence will be missed by all who knew her.

Lynne was born in Etobicoke to Stan and Gwen Dilworth. She grew up alongside her siblings, Rob and Janet, forming lifelong bonds that she cherished. Lynne married Robert Hume in 1965, raising two sons, Greg and Darren. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert, and her son, Darren. Lynne is survived by her son Greg (Fiona), her cherished grandson Ronan, her brother Rob (Katie, Peter, Maggie, Jocelyn), her sister Janet (Peter, Wayne, Adam, Martha), and her sister-in-law Meredith.

She had a deep love for her family and friends, often creating unforgettable memories through shared moments at the family cottage in Muskoka. Lynne enjoyed skiing, tennis, and bridge, always making time to be active and engaged. She was an avid reader, an enthusiastic gardener, and she valued the companionship of her dogs, Dube and Lucky, who brought her comfort and joy. A devoted member of several ladies' groups, Lynne treasured the friendships she built over the years, and her laughter and kindness will remain a lasting legacy.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional care Lynne received during her final days at both Trillium Hospital in Mississauga, under the care of Dr. Kerr and the nursing team, and at Credit Valley Hospital, where Dr. Lim, Dr. Yee, Angela, and the nursing staff provided compassionate care.

David William Hardy

Tuesday, June 10th, 1941 - Thursday, November 14th, 2024

With great sadness, we announce the passing of David Hardy at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at the age of 83 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease.

David leaves behind his beloved wife of 61 years, Margaret Hardy (Temple), originally from Copper Cliff, Ontario; his loving daughter Elaine and son-in-law Paul Lowes of Toronto; three devoted grandchildren, Brooklin, Cameron, and Dawson; and his dear daughter-in-law Tamara Hardy of Whitby. He will also be missed by cousins and his brother Chris Hardy and family in England.

He is predeceased by his beloved son Michael Hardy, who died earlier this year.

David was born in England and emigrated to Canada with his mom (Alice Oates) and step-dad at the age of 12. He attended General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan, where he was trained as an electrical engineer, and he spent his career working at General Motors in Oshawa. He and Margaret had a house built on Garden Street North in Whitby where they raised their family.

In retirement, Dave spent many happy and fulfilling hours volunteering at the Canadian Tank Museum. As retirees, he and Margaret also enjoyed many trips, in their fifth wheel trailer and overseas.

One of David’s greatest sources of joy was the family cottage. With help from family, David and Margaret built the cottage shortly after getting married. David enjoyed continually tinkering with and improving the cottage and property. The cottage has throughout the years been, and remains, a very special gathering place for family and friends.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, and a wonderful friend to many, David will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Parkinson’s Foundation could be made.
