Michael Zaver
1929/1930 - October 20, 2024

Michael passed away on October 20, 2024, after a 15-year battle with dementia. Born in Buchanan, Saskatchewan, in 1929 or 1930, in October or November, the exact date remains unknown.
He and his sister Mary were raised by their mother, Annie, and moved to Toronto in 1947, where Michael attended high school and worked mornings at a bakery.

Michael was a bright and creative individual. He became a teacher despite English not being his first language. His first role was in a one-room schoolhouse in northern Ontario, where he taught from kindergarten to grade 8. Later, he settled in Oshawa, teaching for the Durham District School Board. He was known for his passion and dedication to his students, always prioritizing them over meetings with the Board's administration. His warm humor and ability to remember his students made him a beloved figure throughout his 40-year career.

Michael was gifted in painting, building design, and storytelling. He loved music, though his dancing and clapping were more endearing than graceful. His greatest achievement, however, was his role as a family man. He was deeply devoted to his wife, Doreen (predeceased), and their children, Peter (predeceased) and Tanya, whom he lovingly called his "Princess."

Michael traveled extensively with his wife, authored travel guides, and designed his own home in 1961. In retirement, he enjoyed gardening and cooking, much to the delight (or chagrin) of his loved ones. His dog Louise, his faithful companion for 18 years, shared in many meals, including his infamous fish casserole.

Michael will be remembered for his warm heart and his unique way of knocking on doors with freshly baked bread in hand. He was a truly original soul.

A celebration of Michael’s life will be determined at a later time. For online condolences, please visit Armstrong Funeral Home.

The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Glen Hill Terrace for the excellent care provided in Michael's final years.
