AUGUST 18, 1938 – NOVEMBER 17, 2023
Fred, age 85, passed away peacefully in the late evening of Friday November 17, 2023 at Lakeridge Health Hospital in Oshawa.
Fred was born on August 18, 1938 in Vienna, Austria and immigrated to Canada in 1956 when he was 18 years old.
Upon his arrival, Fred worked hard dedicating his time learning how to become a highly skilled nuclear technician which landed him a 40 year career within OPG.
After a few years in Canada, in 1961, Fred met the love of his life, Linda. As the two spent all of their time together falling more in love, it led to their marriage in 1962 followed by the birth of their first child, Angela in 1963.
Later in life, their son Gernot ‘Gary’ was born in 1972. Fred loved his family and was proud of his children’s achievements.
Fred enjoyed spending his afternoons and evenings watching his favourite football club, Bayern Münich, and Formula 1 races along with the occasional cowboy western.
If he was not cheering on and critiquing his sports teams, he was found enjoying a beer while soaking up the sunshine, telling passionate stories to his friends and family. Fred also enjoyed spending time doing things outside of the home.
As a go’er, he often spent his days shopping for fresh foods for his next cheffing experience, visiting friends and family, tending to his garden and tinkering in his shed while working on small projects. Fred also loved to help others, often sharing advice and bringing gifts and treats to those he cherished most.
Fred loved to host parties in his younger years that filled the room with laughter, loud conversations and debates, good food, good wine and his favourite schlager music.
In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking delicious meals that consisted of his favourite foods, doing crossword puzzles with his wife and spending time emailing friends and family on his laptop. Fred was always on the go and will be remembered for his deep love for birds, his roses and plants, his vegetable garden, cooking, music and his forever missed homeland, Austria.
Fred was known for his loud, forward, strong willed personality, yet those who were closest to him were fortunate to experience the soft, loving, sweetness he shared from time to time.
As sharp as a tack, Fred enjoyed sharing detailed stories and jokes that painted a picture for those who listened.
Much like a bright light in a room, Fred was always passionately sharing his ideas, opinions and thoughts on important matters in the world. In the end, Fred often shared that he longed to go home to his beloved homeland, Austria.
A devoted, loving husband to Dietlinde ‘Linda’ Thajer, a proud and loving father and Opa, a dear friend and neighbour to many, Fred will be cherished, missed and remembered.
We thank each and everyone who has made the time to reach out and offer support and condolences during this time.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at oshawafuneralservices.com for the Thajer family).

September 24, 1950 - November 13, 2023
After a valiant battle with illness Matt passed away peacefully with his family by his side on November 13, 2023 at the age of 73.
Born in Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland in 1950.
Predeceased by father Tom and mother Anne, dear Aunt Kitty and Uncle Pat.
Matt was one of 5 children, Marie, Kathleen, Etta and the late Dennis. Sadly, missed by his beloved children Brian, Matthew, Erika (and their loving mother Rosaleen) and their partners Elaine, Vanessa and Dylan and his grandchildren Jack, Cillian and Maeven.
Matt’s journey took him to Ballinskelligs, Co. Kerry in 1976 where he started his own electrical business. He was a proud member of the local St Michael’s GAA club.
Emigration to Toronto followed in 1987. He soon found himself involved in the local GAA community again, a passion which filled his life with many great friends and equally many great moments. During his early years in Canada he was manager and Chairman of club side Clan na Gael.
He was a founding member as well as manager of both the Ladies & Mens teams for the Durham Robert Emmets GFC. He led in title and by example in every area of the Gaelic Athletic Association, chairing committees across his clubs, division, CCC as well as being a Toronto Board Trustee.
He was part of organizing committee for the historic St Patrick's Day Skydome games in 1990. As a referee Matt was also heavily involved in officiating and remained the final word on rules and regulations across the country.
His final and proudest post was that of Cathaoirleach, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Contae Canada, presiding over the inaugural Canadian Championships.
While Kerry & the GAA were his passion, Matt’s deepest love & pride was his family. He cherished every moment spent with them and beamed with joy in their presence. Always supportive, their biggest champion, fiercest defender and beyond generous with anything he could offer. His gentlemanly manner, loyalty and dry wit will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be truly missed by his family and friends, both in Canada and Ireland. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
The Healy family wish to extend their sincere gratitude to the palliative care unit at Lakeridge Oshawa for all of their compassion and care that Matt received.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation.
