It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Rita Frances (Mickey) Belton, who graced this world for an incredible 90 years. Daughter of Victor and Rita Grady (deceased), Rita was the devoted wife of Ron Belton, her one true love and north star. Together, they shared an extraordinary 68 years of marriage before Ron’s passing in 2023.
Rita and Ron built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. As a proud mother of six, she dedicated her life to her children: Lynn Adams (Marc), Liz Wallis, Chris Belton (Sherry), Colleen Clynch (Kevin), Susan Belton, and John Belton (Penny). Her family expanded to include 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom adored her.
Rita’s journey as a mother was marked by resilience and adaptability as she raised her family in remote locations across northern Ontario, following Ron’s work before settling in Oshawa in 1969. She also shared a special bond with her siblings: Patricia Conlin (deceased), Sheila Doris (Jack), Jimmy Grady (Susan), Michael Grady (deceased), Colleen Reid (Frank), Bonnie Brousseau (Wayne), and Ann Grady. Her best friend and sister, Sheila, will forever cherish their shared adventures and cherished memories.
A passionate golfer and avid walker, Rita loved connecting with people and exploring new adventures. She gave back to her community by teaching as an instructor for the Christopher Leadership Course and volunteering for 16 years at the Palliative Care Unit at St. Michael's Hospital, offering comfort and compassion to those in their final days.
Rita’s legacy is one of kindness, connection, and resilience. Her love for her family, community, and life itself will forever inspire those who knew her. In her final year, her journey was eased by the compassionate care of the nurses and personal support workers at Bloom Retirement Residence in Oshawa, and the incredible team at Sunnybrook Palliative Care Unit, for which the family remains deeply grateful.
Donations: In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations in Rita’s memory be made to Hospice Whitby Roger Anderson House or the Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation.
Rest in peace, Mom. Dad has been waiting with arms wide open.
It is with great sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Peggy Branton (nee Woodrow) on Friday, December 27th, 2024, at Haliburton Highlands Hospital at the age of 96. Beloved wife of the late Ray Branton, of 56 years. Loving mother of Janice (Dirk) DeWitt of Port Charlotte, Florida, and Susan (Roman) Szkilnyk of Haliburton, Ontario.
Proud grandmother, also known as "Ma," of Greg (Jordan) Szkilnyk, Peter (Kiley) Szkilnyk, and step-grandmother of Karen Lomas. Great-grandmother of Brooke, Jake, Luke, Charlotte, and Colson. She is predeceased by her parents Violet and Edward, her brother Bobby, and her son-in-law Paul Lomas (Janice's first husband). Peggy will be greatly missed by her many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, especially her long-time friends, the late Audrey and Don Thompson, whom they spent many years dancing, bowling, golfing, playing bridge, and travelling together.
Peggy was born on March 20th, 1928, in Regina, Saskatchewan, and as a young woman, she moved to Oshawa, Ontario, where she met her husband Ray at the Roller Skate Rink. They provided a loving home for over 40 years for Peggy's mother Violet after her husband passed away.
She was enriched by having Doreen Taggart as a stepsister. Many enjoyable memories were shared together at the Haliburton Highlands cottage with Keith and their cousins Wayne and Kerry. Many fond memories endure to this day.
Peggy worked until she was nearly 70 years of age. She spent several years with Dr. Gary Kindree’s Dental Office, followed by Dr. John Neill’s Office in Oshawa. She also volunteered at Hillsdale Manor in Oshawa for over 15 years.
Whether it was tennis, badminton, bowling, or golfing, staying active helped her grieve when Ray passed. She joined the Oshawa Lawn Bowling Club, which became her “savior,” developing new friendships that lasted a lifetime and staying active with the club until 90 years of age. She helped with tournaments and had the opportunity to sponsor an event with Jackie Pettes.
We will forever cherish the memories and miss you forever, Mom.
A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held at a later date.
Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Mount Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery.
