It is with great sadness that the family of Delphine Thompson announce her passing.

Delphine “Del” Thompson was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Delphine passed away peacefully with her family at her side in the Lakeridge Health Oshawa palliative care unit on December 19, 2022.

She was born to Walter and Natalie Harmer on September 19, 1941. After graduating from high school Delphine met and married Frederick Thompson on June 2, 1962 and together they raised two daughters.

Delphine enjoyed gardening and created beautiful gardens that surrounded her home. She loved to dance, from a polka with a cousin to ballroom dancing with her husband Fred, she always left a lasting impression on the dance floor. She was a loving mother who attended field trips with her children and canvassed annually for the Lung Association. Delphine was an active member of Saint George’s church, a member of the St. Bede’s group and she found great comfort in her faith.

Delphine was preceded in death by her father Walter and mother Natalie Harmer. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Fred Thompson, her daughters Justine Thompson-Clarkin and Erin Hainey, granddaughter Hope Clarkin, grandson Liam Hainey, sister Barbara and brother-in-law Paul Widdifield, brother Walter Harmer and his partner Maureen Lamont.

At Delphine’s request, in her final wishes, there will be no memorial service or funeral by her immediate family.

Dr. George Andrew

Dr. George Andrew

Listed in

March 31, 1926 – November 27, 2022

On November 27, 2022, Dr. George Andrew Jaciw, passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 96.

George had an accomplished life.

Born in Lviv, Ukraine, he studied medicine in Vienna during World War II.

After the war, he continued his studies in Medicine in Munich, Germany.

He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1948.

Then followed a frustrating period: learning English, working as a Laboratory Technician at Western University in London, and applying to universities to complete his Canadian medical education – eventually settling on University of Ottawa (Class of ’55).

George married Martha Tesluk in 1952. After an internship in Warren, Ohio, George completed a residency in General Surgery in Wheeling, West Virginia.

It was there he met Dr. K. Hobbs, another Canadian from Ottawa.

Both doctors decided that fate had brought them together and it marked the start of a long partnership.

They returned to Ontario in search of a community in need of two young doctors.

After a period of searching, they decided on the town of Whitby (then a population of only 7,000).

What followed was a busy practice, first located at the Whitby Plaza. Then, in 1964, switching locations to a new building on 619 Brock St. South, the Whitby Medical Centre.

As the town grew, The Whitby Medical Centre welcomed many young doctors who chose to settle in Whitby and start their practices there.

George’s prime interest in life has always been concern for his patients. During the 1960s and 1970s, besides regular office hours, Dr. Jaciw delivered babies, assisted with surgeries, covered emergencies in hospitals, and conducted house calls for patients from Bowmanville to Pickering.

He also worked for the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, the Whitby Jail, and St. John Ambulance as a Medical Examiner.

He actively participated in the building and funding of Dr. J.O. Ruddy General Hospital (Lakeridge Whitby), where he was later Chief of Staff, and served the Credential Committee responsible for admitting new doctors to the hospital staff.

As a medical volunteer, he attended many local hockey games, stitching up players’ wounds - including a young Bobby Orr. Remembering his immigrant past and honouring his native roots, he sponsored Ukrainian immigrants from refugee camps in Vienna and Rome to come and settle in Canada.

In later years, he sponsored several Ukrainian students, some of whom became lifelong friends, helping them attain a university education in Canada. Always active and busy, George’s hobbies included hunting, skiing, hiking and gardening.

After 60 years, Dr. Jaciw officially retired in 2016. He leaves behind a loving family: his wife Martha Jaciw of 70 years, two children Stephen Jaciw and Irene Sim, grandchildren Matthew Jaciw, Samantha Jaciw, Sarah Jaciw, Michael Jaciw, Catherine O’Donnell (Jake), Christine Sim, and Owen Sim, and great-grandchildren Shayne and Sophia O’Connor.

His contributions to the Town of Whitby and the health of its residents continues to live on.

Funeral Services were held for Dr. Jaciw on December 2, 2022 and he was laid to rest at St. Wolodymr and St. Ohla Ukrainian Cemetery.

Doreen Martha Hawley

Doreen Martha Hawley

Listed in

NOVEMBER 23, 1935 - DECEMBER 1, 2022

In the arms of her children, and with heaven’s gates open, Mrs. Doreen Martha Hawley was called home on Thursday December 1, 2022, to be with her beloved Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Doreen was the dear mother of Myrna Keriakis (Makram) and Mark Hawley (Caroline), and the dear grandmother of Astrid Hawley and Christopher Hawley.

She joins her beloved husband, Rev. Earle Hawley, who went to be with his Lord and Saviour on September 7, 2018.

Doreen Martha Hawley was born on a farm at Piccadilly in 1935 to Dorval and Martha Babcock.

She was the youngest of 3 children – brother Wilfred Babcock and sister Helen Reynolds (Babcock).

She moved with her parents to Verona where she completed Elementary School, and then attended Sydenham High School for 5 years.

During this time she was active in the Youth meetings and was director of the Junior Missionary Society in the local Free Methodist church. After High School she attended Peterborough Teacher’s College and graduated in 1955.

That summer she met Earle Hawley who was a student at Asbury Seminary in Kentucky but home for the summer and was the youth worker at Roblin Holiness Movement camp. She was at the same camp helping in the Daily Vacation Bible School program. In the fall she began teaching Grades 1 - 6 at Jackson’s Mills near Kingston for one year. The next year she married Earle in 1956 and they both went to Kentucky, Earle to continue his Seminary and Doreen to take her B.A. in Elementary Education at Asbury College.

After graduation in 1958, she helped in the Belhaven Free Methodist church that Earle pastored for 1 year, with Sunday School, Youth and WMI.

During this time she also taught Grade 2 at East Guillimbury Heights in Newmarket. After serving for 1 year in Belhaven Free Methodist Church, she went with her husband to Egypt as Free Methodist missionaries 1959-1986 where they served for 26 years with a break of 1 year during the 1967 war when they went to Haiti as missionaries for 1 year.

During that year in Haiti Doreen taught in the Girl’s School but was delayed returning to Canada due to contracting typhoid.

During the 27 years in Egypt Doreen taught in the Theological College, was Christian Education Mission Director which involved writing and producing a 7 year Daily Vacation Bible School curriculum and holding 5-6 leaders’ workshops yearly throughout Egypt.

She held Women’s and Children’s meetings, was Mission Treasurer and homeschooled her 2 children Myrna and Mark.

She enjoyed her children both in schooling with them and vacationing in Cyprus. The last year she missed Mark as he attended High School in Germany. A happy, but busy time, just before returning to Canada, was preparing and enjoying daughter, Myrna’s wedding.

She married Makram Keriakis, an Egyptian. and they came to Canada when the Hawley’s returned and also Mark from Germany. After 27 years of missionary service 1959-1986, the Hawley’s returned to Canada where they both served 12 years in Housey’s Rapids 1986-1988, in Deep River 1988-1994, and Athens 1994-1998.

Doreen began to work for Statistics Canada while in Deep River and continued for 16 years. When Earle retired in Courtice, after serving in the Free Methodist church for 40 years, Doreen continued working for Statistics Canada as well as serving In Trulls Road Free Methodist Church for 5 years as Christian Education Director, producing 2 booklets on Children’s Baptism and Children’s Communion.

She also launched a Women’s Ministry program there and then served as President and Director of Programming. Doreen also served as the Conference Women’s Ministry International Executive for 15 years in 2 positions, Treasurer, and Vice President of Global Missions.

Many summers were spent in a trailer at Wesley Acres after returning from Egypt. It was enjoyable to have both Michelle & Christopher (Grandchildren) come to stay for DVBS and Youth and also for visits in the home on every holiday.

The Hawleys sold their house because of deteriorating health and Earle’s progression of Parkinson’s and they moved to White Cliffe Retirement home in December, 2012 where they still attended Trulls Road F.M. church.

However with mounting health problems they moved to Woodhaven Long Term Care in Markham the first part of 2015. They both were well cared for and spent 3 years together there in adjoining rooms. Earle went to be with his Lord and Saviour on September 7, 2018. Doreen’s health deteriorated significantly after suffering a stroke in September 2021.

Her suffering and disability ended when Jesus called her home on December 1, 2022.
