MARCH 5, 1931 – NOVEMBER 22, 2022

With sad hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Joan Maggs, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa.

Born in Toronto ON, daughter of Walter and Dorothy Creary, Joan had one brother Ross who predeceased her.

Joan was a distinguished student and athlete at Harbord Collegiate and received a Bachelor of Phys Ed from University of Toronto in 1952.

In high school, she participated each year in Gilbert and Sullivan musicals, as she loved to sing.

She worked as a lifeguard and her university summers were spent as the director of aquatics at Camp Winnebago.

Moving to teach in the Phys Ed program at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, she was the coach of the synchronized swim team. She met and married Roger, a divinity student at Emmanuel College.

Roger’s career took them to parishes in Edmonton, Langley BC, and Port Coquitlam BC. During these years their children Jocelyn (Al), Greg (Virginia), Valerie, and Barry (Diane) were born.

In 1972, the family moved to Toronto to pursue educational goals. Joan received a B.Ed. and embarked on a teaching career while Roger became a hospital chaplain.

Joan later completed a M.Ed. at York University during her summers. Joan retired from teaching in 1996 after 22 years in a career that she loved.

In retirement Joan and Roger travelled extensively and Joan continued to be active at St. Johns Port Whitby especially as a choir member, in the 420 RAF Golden Wing, and the University Women’s Club. For many years, Joan volunteered at the Oshawa General Hospital. Joan maintained many lifelong friendships through the years. Her kind and sweet nature was appreciated by all. But she loved a good laugh!

The family welcomed seven grandchildren (Alexander), Madeline, Elizabeth, Leslie, Elliot, Natalie and Connor. With the help of Valerie, Joan and Roger were able to remain in their own home until 4 months ago, even through the difficult times of Covid lockdowns. Recently, health challenges made this difficult.

Celebration of Life to be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Dec 9, 2022 at 1:30 pm with a Visitation at 12:30 and a reception at 2:30.

Suddenly at home on Friday November 11th, 2022 in his 92nd year.

Beloved husband of Gloria (née Vine) for 68 years.

Loving devoted father of Sue Genge (Glenn), David Adair (Susan) and Wendy Ekker (Ed).

Adoring Grandpa of Katie (Geoff), Amy (Phil), Andrew (Courtney), Matthew (Michelle), Christopher (Theresa), Michael (Sydney), Mark (Kathy), Daniel (Heather) and Great-Grandpa of Gwen, Elliott, Gavin, Collin, Gloria, Teddy, Leila, Ellie and three more on the way.

Predeceased by his sister Gloria Stubbings (Don).

Cherished brother-in-law of Ralph Vine (Rietta) and Bill Vine (Vicky).

Gord will be missed by extended family and friends. Upon graduating from Dentistry Gord and his best friend and wife Gloria moved to Oshawa to begin his Dental Practice of 47 years. He had a very bright mind and had a thirst for lifelong learning.

Gord continued to study Dentistry throughout his career and apply his learning in innovative ways by adopting progressive techniques to his practice.

In New York City in 1989 Gord’s whole family proudly watched him receive his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry.

In 2001, Gord and Gloria began their retirement by spending many happy days at their condo up in Huntsville. There they continued to golf daily and, in the winter, enjoy cross country skiing.

Gord was an active participant at Northminster, Brooklin, Kingsview and Westminster United Churches.

He lived his Christian faith quietly and devotedly.

He was a charter member of the Westmount Kiwanis Club. Gord was truly a family man.

With his wife Gloria, and often with many family accompanying, Gord enjoyed and was grateful to travel extensively throughout the world. He was an active skier and golfer and spent many, many hours gardening and walking and caring for family dogs.

Gord enjoyed a good game of bridge with friends and was in various clubs including The Durham Wine Makers Club. Gord lived a life that he felt was full of blessings.

He soldiered on to continue to be with his family after suffering a stroke in 2018 that abruptly changed his life and cast physical limitations on continuing the active lifestyle, he and Gloria were so grateful for and accustomed to.

After returning home and living life seated in a wheelchair, Gord continued to derive joy and feel eternally grateful for the love, support and companionship provided by his loving wife, Gloria at his side.

Together they worked to find a new path, continually striving to live a full and rich life with the support of and close contact of their children and grandchildren. Gord worked tirelessly, and daily to recover the loss of motor function caused by the stroke.

With the support of, Neurochangers’ Physiotherapists, Peter his PSW, Candace his massage therapist and many more, he made gains in mobility and refused to give up.

Gord was eternally grateful for the incredible support network of PSWs Lina, Stephanie, Sarah, Arlene, Christine, Heather and many more who were at his side, always with a smile and loving support. Gord gave all of us four more years.

For that, we are eternally grateful. The suddenness of his passing is a shock to all, but we are so grateful knowing that when we last said goodbye, it was fully expecting to see him later. That’s just the way Gord would have wanted it.

We have peace in knowing that he rests safely in God’s loving arms in heaven.

Relatives and friends are invited to visiting at McINTOSH-ANDERSON-KELLAM FUNERAL HOME LTD., 152 King St. E., Oshawa (905-433-5558) on Sunday November 13th, 2022 from 2 to 5 pm.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday November 15th, 2022 at 12:30 pm at Westminster United Church, 1850 Rossland Rd. E., Whitby. Interment at Oshawa Union Cemetery.

Donations in memory of Gord to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre or Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
