PARISEAU, Brenda May -
June 9, 1966 – July 24, 2024

Brenda Pariseau, aged 58, died suddenly at her group home on July 24, 2024, after spending a good day doing some of her favorite things, going on an outing for bowling and lunch followed by a visit with friends over coffee and donuts and the no hands Tik Tok challenge.

Brenda was born on June 9, 1966, and was an Anishinaabe Kwe from the Algonquin first nation of Kebaowek.

Predeceased by her parents, Mary (McKenzie) and Edgar Pariseau and her brother, Leo.

Survived by her sisters, Carolyn (Wayne), Sharon, and Terry (Russell) and brothers, Victor, Conrad (Jennifer), and Neil (Amanda) and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Brenda had physical and intellectual challenges throughout her life which she met with tenacity and laughter.

She lived in Oshawa for the last 23 years and was supported by Community Living Oshawa Clarington (CLOC) where she resided in one of their group homes and enjoyed attending their day program, playing on their baseball league, going on outings with staff, and spending time with friends, particularly her special friend, Geoff.

Brenda will be missed and remembered by her CLOC family for her sense of humour, feisty attitude and direct form of communication.

A celebration of Brenda's life will be organized at CLOC for a later date. Brenda did not know how to tell time or understand a calendar, but she lived for annual holidays with Christmas and her birthday being her most loved of the year.

Brenda also enjoyed a good Tim Hortons coffee with a boston cream donut, eating pizza or a poutine, with one of her favourite restaurants among many, being Red Lobster. She was a lover of all things Disney with Mickey Mouse being her idol and who she had an opportunity to meet when she went on a life-long dream trip to Disney World in in 2019. She also loved collecting stuffed animals and anything that involved space and aliens, with her favourite movie being E.T. the Extra-terrestrial, as well as scary movies with her favourite, being The Ring.

Brenda enjoyed doing arts and crafts, rug hooking, building puzzles and playing video games, especially the Super Mario brothers.

Although Brenda enjoyed living in Oshawa and being close to her sister Terry and her family, her heart remained in her home community of Kipawa, Quebec where she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, going for walks, biking, swimming, and sledding as well as being a long-time member of the APHTK - Handicap Association of Temiscaming and Kipawa before she moved to Oshawa. Brenda maintained her connection to her Indigenous roots by attending Pow Wows from where she amassed a collection of dream catchers.

A Sacred Fire was held in Brenda’s honour in her home community of Kipawa, Quebec for the past four days where family and friends gathered to comfort each other, share stories and memories, and to send Brenda off on her journey back to the spirit world and the Creator.

Brenda will be sorely missed by all of her family, friends and Terry’s dog, Jackson. The family would like to thank CLOC for all of the support and care that they provided to Brenda for over 20 years, particularly those staff and managers that she formed close bonds with, and all of the medical staff that cared for her over the years with kindness and compassion, especially during her more recent health struggles.

Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME 847 King Street, West on Tuesday August 6, 2024, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Brenda’s funeral service will be held at a later date at OUR LADY OF THE LAKE MISSION CATHOLIC CHURCH in Kipawa followed by a burial at the Jawbone’s Bay cemetery to be with her parents.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Community Living Oshawa Clarington.

POPELAS, John Popelas

POPELAS, John  -  Passed away peacefully, at St. Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto, on Monday, July 29th, at the wonderful age of 98.

Beloved husband of Joan (2008, nee White). Loving father of Ken (Christine), Kathy, Jane (Harvey, 2001), Greg, Michelle (Grant, 2021), John (Noreen).

Cherished grandfather of Celeste (2024) (Rob), Jessica (Mark), Kendra (George), Alexander (Joanna), Grace (Kathryn), Jack, Holden (Cassandra), Will, Ava (Sam), Louisa, Joseph, Mia and Leo.

Adored great-grandfather of Paige, Luca, Ethan, Shawn, Brett and Annie.

John was born on November 5, 1925, in Budkovce, Czechoslovakia. John's father immigrated to Montreal in1926.

It was not until 1936 that John and his mother came to Montreal and his family was reunited. Shortly thereafter, his mother passed away.

At 17 years old, John worked for Noorduyn Aviation in Montreal making the Harvard aircraft for the British Commonwealth. This led to his next job at Fleet Aircraft in Fort Erie, Ontario. There they made the wings for the Lancaster bomber planes.

Charitable work came naturally to John. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, involved in countless Goodfellows' food drives, canvassed for the Ontario March of Dimes, drove cancer patients to treatment appointments and was a founding member of the legendary Wild Game Dinner.

Retirement afforded John the time for two of his passions, fishing and golfing. John was a long-term member and past Board member of the Kingsville Golf and Country Club where he made many friendships that spanned over 35 years and golfed until the age of 95.

Raising six children and his love for sports led seamlessly into coaching minor league hockey and baseball for many years.

Friends are invited to share their memories of John with his family at Kendrick Funeral Home, Kingsville, ON, on Wednesday, August 7th, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John de Brebeuf Catholic Church, Kingsville, ON, on Thursday, August 8th, at 11:00 a.m.

PROESTOS, Efthimios (Mike) Proestos

Listed in

PROESTOS, Efthimios (Mike) Proestos   -  passed away on July 29, 2024.

He leaves behind his devoted and loving wife Elizabeth (Betty) of 51 years and daughter, Xenia.

Mike was born on August 24, 1936 in Aigaleo, Greece. In those years, nobody had much but you would never know it from the stories he told about a wonderful childhood, his beloved parents, Polixeni and Yianni, older brother Parasxos (Despina) and younger sister Anastasia (Yianni).

Many of his childhood friends and neighbours never left their street and there were many joyful reunions over the years.

By the early 1970’s, Betty had moved to Canada from Scotland. She and a Greek friend were traveling in Greece, where she met Mike. It wasn’t long before he followed her to Canada and they were married in Toronto in 1973.

For the next three decades, they lived within walking distance of Greektown (Danforth) before moving to the suburbs. He worked as a painter, where he was able to get by on limited English and made life-long friends and koumbari. Xenia was born in 1977 and it was the little family of three from then on.

It was hard not having extended family in Canada but good friends were never far.

Mike’s singular focus for Xenia was education and he was so proud of her when she graduated law school. As for her non-academic endeavours, he never understood why someone who wasn’t being chased would run long distances but he cheered the loudest and was the proudest supporter at every finish line.

He begrudgingly completed many 5km walks and trail runs, crossing the finish lines that happened to be en route to the food and beverages and bypassing the ones that weren’t. This was just one example of what he would do to make his daughter and wife happy. Wearing a kilt on festive occasions was another.

Canada was home because of his wife and daughter but his heart never left Greece and until the end of his days, reminisced about life in Greece and the Greek lifestyle. He loved his family, food, backgammon, the kafenio and soccer (an 80+ year supporter of Panathinaikos).

The highlight of his soccer career was kicking the ball around on a beach in Greece which led to a chance encounter with Pele and a prized photo he described as depicting, “the greatest soccer player of all time. And Pele!” Most of all, he loved being in company. He loved being with people and despite the language barrier, made everyone laugh. His favourite jokes never got old.

After smoking three packs of cigarettes a day for 65 years, allegedly without inhaling, it seemed he was indestructible. After losing his driver’s license to an Alzheimer’s diagnosis five years ago, he managed to navigate the public transit system for the first time in his life without a bus schedule, a cell phone or keys. After a frantic and police-involved search, he was found. Back from the casino, sitting at the kitchen table. The only sign of confusion he showed was in asking, “where have I been? Where have you been?” But, eventually, the Alzheimer’s and a broken hip got the better of him. He was brave and strong and never complained. He was 87 and lived a full life but it was still too soon.

There are many worthy charities.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation. Please also plan a visit, coffee or dinner with your mom, dad or family.

PURDY, Lenore Ethel Purdy

PURDY, Lenore Ethel (nee EATON)   -  September 7, 1928, North York, Ontario – July 28, 2024, Windsor, Ontario Daughter of Roy and Pearl (Walker) Eaton, and the youngest among a large extended family.

Lenore grew up in Toronto and Hamilton, with happy summers on the Burlington farm of a much- loved aunt and uncle.

A gifted vocalist from an early age, Lenore sang in choirs through much of her life. Her marriage to United Church minister, Lawrence (Lawrie) Purdy in 1950, started a partnership full of love and laughter that lasted 48 years.

Lenore's warmth made the Purdy home a welcoming space for the family's many friends, both in Canada, and during four years with the church in Trinidad and Tobago.

Lenore thrived in the often overlooked job of clergy spouse, an essential, albeit unpaid, anchor of the congregations they served.

Throughout her life, Lenore's first thought was for other people, not only for family and her many dear friends, but also for the caregivers and staff who helped her as her needs increased.

She left this life peacefully, secure in the knowledge that she had both loved well and been deeply loved.

Lenore will be greatly missed by the family she treasured: children, Jennifer (John Palmer), Joanna (Peter Bell) and Lawrence (Pippa Lawson); grandchildren, Aaron Palmer (Amy Palmer), Lydia Palmer, Joseph Bell (Kathleen Burzycki) and Justin Bell (Victoria Maria); and great-grandchildren, Ophelia, Imogen and Lysander Palmer.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024, from 1 p.m., until a Celebration of Life service at 2 p.m., all being held at Families First – South Windsor (3260 Dougall Ave., Windsor, Ontario, 519-969- 5841). Cremation to follow.

POTTS, Iris Potts  - Our mother Iris passed on July 24th.

She was 94 years old and very tired.

For years she would often say, "I'm ready to go, my bags are packed!”

She will join our father Stan, which in the end, was all she wanted.

Iris was quick to see the good in people, often refusing to take off her rose coloured glasses.

She was caring, thoughtful and funny, and none of that hid the toughness she inherited from her father: Nobody messed with her family! She was the perfect mother, a steadfast wife and a trusted friend to all.

She was wonderful. And we will miss her.

July 6, 1948 - July 22, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we share that our husband, father and Nonno, Pat Consoli, passed away peacefully on Monday July 22, 2024, at the age of 76.

He is survived by his saint of a wife of 54 years, Sue. Loving father of Jason (Tamara) and Brandy (Erik Oliveira). Beloved Nonno of Matteo, Jordan, Elia and Tavio.

His siblings are Domenico (Cettina), Giovanna (the late Settimo), Caterina (Vincenzo), Elvira (Frank), Guido (the late Ellen), Ralph (Dee), Dora (the late Bob) and Gina (Rick). He is also survived by is mother in law, Donna Crease, predeceased by his father-in-law Donald Crease. He will missed by all of them as well as his many nieces, nephews and extended families.

He was a long-time employee of the Canada Post, known for his fun, loving ways and his pranks with coworkers. He always enjoyed a good laugh, known as “Good looking Pat”, he loved creating great memories and sharing those stories of his adventures as Postman Pat.

He was a caregiver to his own mother in her later years, a responsibility that he carried out with grace and love.

He was a long-time member of Chedoke Golf Course and their hole-in-one club, a legend of sorts known by many usually because he enjoyed getting the other golfers riled up with his antics. He loved to get people going and create amazing memories on golf trips with the guys. He earned a black belt in Okinawin Shorin-Ryu. He will be remembered as a Sensei who cared about his students. He was a great mentor to many of his kids’ friends. He was an avid gardener, who found joy later in life in trying new recipes in the kitchen, much to the dismay of Sue who had to toss many pots and pans thanks to his “creations”.

He was often a royal pain but, at the end of the day, everything that came from Pat came with love and those of us who had him in our lives are blessed with many fun, loving memories of some amazing times over the years.
