It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Elton, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Elton "Mervin" Samuel died on September 9, 2024 following a decline related to a prolonged illness and complications related to Advanced Alzheimer's disease. He grew up a shy and quiet boy and had a passion for swimming and boxing. He made a career for himself with boxing in Trinidad under management of his brother Orlando. He loved birds and enjoyed keeping them as pets earning one of his nicknames "Birdie". He had a love for music and dancing and would spend hours compiling playlists and listening to soca, calypso, and gospel. He enjoyed his connections and was always delighted to spend time and chat with family and friends.

Elton migrated to Canada in the 1970's and was introduced to his future wife Jennifer through a mutual friend. They married in 1976 and resided within the Toronto/Scarborough area until 1990 before moving to the Durham Region.

SPELLEN, Carole Andrea Spellen (Brown) - Thursday, January 7th, 1937 - Sunday, September 8th, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carole Andrea Spellen (nee Brown) who died peacefully on September 8, 2024 at the Oshawa Lakeridge Health Center.

Carole was born on January 7, 1937 in Toronto, and was raised in a loving, vibrant and busy home by dedicated parents, William and Heloise Brown (deceased).

Fortunate enough to be surrounded in love by a large family, she was predeceased by her beloved brother William (Gus) Brown and sister Adele Bryce (Bob deceased). She is survived by her siblings Judy Muzzi (Bill deceased), Stephen Brown (Barbara) and cherished sister-in-law Diana Knowles.

In August 1961, she married Charles (Chuck) Spellen and together they built a caring and supportive household with their children Melissa Spellen (Walter Leahy) and Anthony Spellen. Their marriage spanned over 6 decades, and together with Chuck, they formed an impressive team who routinely transformed their home into a beautiful space where flawless entertaining was routine and effortlessly executed to the delight of friends and family.

Her passing will leave a tremendous void in the lives of her numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family: Auntie Carole loved all of them and nothing made her happier than having a gathering of family and friends together with her and Chuck at their home on Bowman in Whitby.

As a proud graduate of the University of Toronto in 1959, Carole accepted a position as a high school teacher and was very fortunate to meet fellow new teacher, a young and dashing Chuck Spellen, in her first teaching assignment at Donovan Collegiate in Oshawa.

In addition to raising her children, Carole owned her own successful decorating business with her partners, and guided her clients to visualize and express their own individual aesthetic. Active in her community, Carole volunteered and assisted many organizations over the years, most recently working with Community Care Durham. Carole enjoyed curling for many years and her competitive and spirited approach to the game garnered many accolades. She was also very involved with regular bridge games played with dear friends for over 60 years.

Carole's kindness and willingness to help others in need was fundamentally part of her nature. She will be greatly missed.

Please join us for a celebration of Carole’s life at Barnes Memorial Funeral Home, 5295 Thickson Road North, Whitby, ON. Visitation will take place at 11:00 am up until the time of service at 12:00 pm in the chapel. A reception to follow.

Kindly consider donations in lieu of flowers to ALS Society of Canada and Community Care Durham, in memory of Carole.

STOREY, Ernest Andrew Storey - 1929-2024

A casual, informal gathering in honour of Ernest Andrew Storey

Ernest Andrew Storey passed away at 95 years of age on Monday, September 2, 2024 in his family home.  He was a kind, compassionate man; he was witty, opinionated and outspoken and loved to laugh.  He was likeable and charming in many ways.  The word "enigma" is a fitting description of his character. He is deeply missed by his son Ernest John and daughter-in-law Elizabeth, granddaughter Megan and her husband Eli Gergolas.

Ernest was born May 27, 1929 in Northern Ireland and came to Canada as an infant with his parents Maggie and Tom Storey and brothers Adam and Thomas James. The depression of the 1930's made their new life difficult; work was scarce but they always had food on the table.  Ernest and Mildred Louise Brooke were married in 1954.  Their daughter, Pamela Louise predeceased them and the death of their infant daughter was a tragic loss for Ernest.  He called her his little rosebud.  When his granddaughter Megan was born, poppy and granny cared for her with love and affection during the day.

Ernest had a genuine, living experience in his life with Christ and is in heaven now praising God for the death, burial and resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ, as his passport to glory.

An Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rain fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again may God
hold you in the palm of His hand.
Amen
