STOREY, Ernest Andrew Storey - 1929-2024
A casual, informal gathering in honour of Ernest Andrew Storey
Ernest Andrew Storey passed away at 95 years of age on Monday, September 2, 2024 in his family home. He was a kind, compassionate man; he was witty, opinionated and outspoken and loved to laugh. He was likeable and charming in many ways. The word "enigma" is a fitting description of his character. He is deeply missed by his son Ernest John and daughter-in-law Elizabeth, granddaughter Megan and her husband Eli Gergolas.
Ernest was born May 27, 1929 in Northern Ireland and came to Canada as an infant with his parents Maggie and Tom Storey and brothers Adam and Thomas James. The depression of the 1930's made their new life difficult; work was scarce but they always had food on the table. Ernest and Mildred Louise Brooke were married in 1954. Their daughter, Pamela Louise predeceased them and the death of their infant daughter was a tragic loss for Ernest. He called her his little rosebud. When his granddaughter Megan was born, poppy and granny cared for her with love and affection during the day.
Ernest had a genuine, living experience in his life with Christ and is in heaven now praising God for the death, burial and resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ, as his passport to glory.
Mechthild was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Alexander (October 27, 2019). She is survived by her children Susanne (Greg Murchison), Bernie (Brenda) and Martin (Shelley) and her grandchildren that she loved dearly: Brigitte Hetzel (Phillip), Rebecka Van Der Woude (Nicholas), Graeme, Caitlyn and Eric (Lauren LaValley). Also survived by her sisters Liesel Kirsch, Traudel Baur and her brother Hermann Baur.
Born in Reutlingen, Germany, she immigrated to Canada in 1958 to wed the man she loved.
Mechthild enjoyed time with family and friends including annual golf trips to the US with friends, playing cards, dances at Club Loreley and in her younger years she and Alex enjoyed hosting dances at their farm. She also took great pride in her plants and gardens and also maintaining a clean and orderly home, in spite of her three children and husband.
Mechthild was especially happy with being able to attend Rebecka and Nick’s wedding earlier this summer, and recently just being with her grandchildren.
A private family mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, 3800 Courtice Road North, Courtice on Tuesday, September 24, following which there will be a celebration of life at Club Loreley, 389 Dean Avenue, Oshawa (3PM).
In lieu of flowers, you may wish to consider a memorial donation to Club Loreley where Mechthild was a longtime honorary member, or to a charity that is meaningful to you.
