July 5, 1959 - May 19, 2024
With birds welcoming the birth of a new day, Kathleen Elizabeth Paterson-Smith (Kate, Meow Meow, Kitty), age 64, passed peacefully on May 22nd.
She was born July 5, 1959, to John and Joanne Harman and grew up in Guildwood Village.
She married her first husband, James Donald Paterson, on August 8th, 1981.
She later married her sweetheart, Michael Norman Smith, on October 21st, 2006. Kathleen’s love created an opening for both men to be cherished parents to her children.
As anyone who came across her path knows, Kathleen is an everlasting wave of love, acceptance, and playfulness. Her purpose in life was to nurture, support, and care. Her love of gardening, dedication to building pollinator gardens, and passion for growing the Monarch butterfly population led her to release over 1,000 Monarchs over the years.
Kathleen’s real joy came from being part of the fabric of her children's and grandchildren's lives. For anyone reading this lucky enough to have a mother, please call her and tell her you love her.
Kathleen will be remembered for many things, but what stands out to her family is her silly playfulness at the cottage, her commitment to family, her love of creating, and her willingness to be selfless for the sake of togetherness.
“You carry Mother Earth within you. She is not outside you. Mother Earth is not just your environment. In that insight of inter-being, it is possible to have real communication with the Earth, which is the highest form of prayer.” ~ Nhat Hanh. As a living embodiment of the Great Mother, we take solace in Kathleen returning back to her source, with us always and in everything.
Kathleen leaves behind a legacy of love and family. She is survived by her husband, Michael Smith, and ex-husband, James Paterson; her child and her husband, Jennifer and Colin Lindsay; her child and his wife, Kyle and Melissa Paterson; her step-children, Jennifer (Steve) Fancey, Ian, and Shanna Smith; her grandchildren, Bodhi and Piper Lindsay and Sequoia Paterson and Brantley and Emerie Fancy and Kyah Smith; her sister and husband, Maureen and Paul Leslie; her brother and wife, Mark and Sandie Harman; and her sister and husband, Carla Hall and Paul Winkelstein; and her dear cousin, Cathy Hamilton.
There are many more Kathleen held in her heart; we hope you will forever hold her in yours.
Please join us in celebrating her life on Saturday, June 15th, between 10:00 am and 12 noon (formal time at 11:00 am) in the backyard of 269 Union Avenue, Prince Albert, Ontario. 289-987-6259.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider contributing to memorializing Kathleen at the Oak Ridges Hospice. Kathleen had just started volunteering at the Hospice, and her vision to make an impact was taken much too soon.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Kim Mary Elizabeth Visser (nee Memery), a beloved wife, Mom, sister, daughter, cousin, friend, secretary, and defender of the underdog.
Kim died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on May 2nd, 2024, at Lakeridge Hospital in Oshawa, ON.
Many people know her as Mrs. Visser, the heart and soul of Denis O’Connor Catholic High School.
For over twenty years she helped staff and students navigate the highs and lows of high school, providing counsel, comfort, and a safe place for many.
The outpouring of support from the DO’C community has been remarkable.
As visitor after visitor poured into her hospital room to say goodbye, it became undoubtedly clear that Kim’s love, laughter, and kind soul had a profound effect on every person who walked through DO’C’s hallways.
Others will remember her as Kim Memery, or perhaps “Kimmie”: the darling of the Terrace Roller Rink in Toronto, driving around the neighbourhood in her iconic green Camaro.
Throughout her life, she lit up every room she walked into, and had a true gift for making people feel seen. Kim will be remembered as the most attentive, caring, compassionate, and selfless person we have ever had the privilege of knowing.

We love you Mrs. Visser… Kim… Kimmie… Mom…M.O.T.H…Y.O.T.H.

"The world doesn't feel as happy anymore" It's with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kayla Catheriner Allert, a remarkable young woman who defied the odds with her indomitable spirit and zest for life.
Kayla passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 24 at Toronto General Hospital. She was 33 years old.
Kayla joined the Smales family at the age of seven where she quickly became the heart and soul of her family.
Her infectious enthusiasm for life was evident to all who knew her and she was a testament to resilience and joy despite facing significant health challenges from a young age. Kayla will be missed dearly by her family including her mommy Frances Smales, sister Tori Kay (Steve), brother Andrew Smales (Fran Kerfoot), sister Tiffin Monk (Rob Bertschi), best friend Christine Bilsky, and the "kids" Billy, Lily, Vivian and Sebastian. Kayla is predeceased by her cherished daddy David Smales.
Despite her health issues, Kayla knew how to enjoy every minute life had to offer. She cherished her family and friends deeply and left an indelible mark on their lives as well as anyone who was lucky enough to spend time with her. Kayla's passions were as vibrant as her personality -she adored celebrating her birthday, relished all things Barney, The Lion King and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and found joy in music, dancing, Big Macs, new shoes, pens on a string, calculators ("games"), fashionable eyeglasses and jewelery, and coffee.
Her love for her family was unmatched and unwavering.
After a recent, sudden decline in Kayla's health followed by a weeklong stay in Toronto General Hospital's ICU, Kayla joined her Daddy in heaven. Kayla spent her final few days surrounded by love from all her closest people with her hospital room never empty of family and friends and while our hearts are broken, we take solace knowing that she has been reunited with her Daddy in heaven catching up on missed hugs, kisses and cuddles.
She now rests in peace, free from the physical burdens she carried so bravely in life. Kayla's memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. Her love and laughter will continue to resonate in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of Kayla's life will be held by her family, Wednesday May 8th, from 12:00pm until 3:00pm at Trinity Hall in Bowmanville (formerly Trinity United Church- corner of Divison and Church Street).
Kayla's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have reached out with support and love during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Blood Services or another charity of your choice. Kayla, you will be dearly missed.
Our loss is Heaven's gain. We will love you forever.
