89, of Whitby Ontario, passed away on February 25 2024. While his loss was not completely unexpected, his family is profoundly saddened.
Ken was born on January 27 1935 to Phyllis and Sidney Spratley in Toronto and was one of 2 siblings, having a younger sister Carole.
During his high school years at Vaughan Road Collegiate, Ken simultaneously became a pilot at the age of 16. At the time, he was the youngest pilot in Canada, which was one of his proudest achievements.
His first job out of school was flying as a bush pilot in northern Ontario.
He went on afterwards to become a skilled craftsman, a successful business man and an elected councillor for the Town of Pickering.
Ken was a loving husband, an exemplary father, a proud grandfather and a wonderful human being. He embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love for his family, strength of character, a positive spirit and an unending curiosity about life.
In 1955, Ken met his one and only true love Evelyn at the Frosty Freeze on the corner of Dufferin and Wilson in Toronto. After marrying in 1958, Ken and Evelyn went on to have 3 children, Richard Kenneth, James Daniel and Jennifer Rebecca.
When Ken retired he spent his time happily reading, listening to big band music, researching an abundance of topics, and pondering world issues.
Ken was predeceased by: his wife Evelyn Adele Spratley, his mother and father Phyllis and Sidney Spratley, and his daughter-in-law Kathryn Spratley.
Ken is survived by: his son Richard Spratley, Richard’s wife Darlene and Richard’s daughters Hollie and Skylar, his son James Spratley, James’ wife Lana Khobod and James’ step-son Alex Khobod, his daughter Jennifer Spratley and Jennifer’s step-children Tasha Eisen and Maxwell Eisen, and his sister Carole Elder.
Services will be held at BARNES MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME on March 4 2024 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, an organization Ken felt strongly about. www.heartandstroke.ca.
