Pasquale (Pat) Calogero

Listed in

APRIL 1, 1938 – OCTOBER 27, 2022

Passed away peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at the age of 84.

Beloved husband of Nancy. Loving father of Rosy.

Caring brother (brother-in-law) of Antonietta (Franco), Angelina (the late Vincenzo), Filomena (Mario), and is predeceased by his brothers Ferdinando (1974) and Pasquale (1936).

Son of the late Francesco Paolo and Rosa Vita of Banzi, Province of Potenza, Italy.

Zio/Uncle Pat will be deeply missed by all his nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A barber by trade, Pat gave decades of haircuts on Cedar St. in South Oshawa.

In his early days, however, Pat studied horticultural and loved being on the land cultivating and growing acres of asparagus, tomatoes, and peppers, and pruning and grafting to create trees or grape vines that produced several varieties in one.

His other hobbies included chopping felled trees for firewood, making maple syrup, hunting, running the wood stove.

He loved to treat family and friends to bottles of his homemade syrup, sprays of asparagus, baskets of tomatoes and peppers, zucchini, pumpkins, etc.

If you came home to a treat on your porch, you knew dad had stopped by (because he never called ahead). Pat will be remembered by all for his generosity, humour, flawless memory, stories of ancestors and the old days, and his old-fashioned respect.

Pasquale was an April Fool’s baby, born April 1, 1938, so it is fitting his funeral be held on All Saints’ Day, does it not?

All are welcome to the visitation, which will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Tuesday, November 1 between the hours of 4pm and 8pm, and to the service which will be held the following morning Wednesday, November 2 at 10:30am, also at the Oshawa Funeral Home.

Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

Philip George Long

Philip George Long

Listed in

Died peacefully on October 13, 2022, ten days after his 83rd birthday, at Hillsdale Estates, Oshawa.

Devoted husband of Doris. Father of Todd (Ashlee), Chris (Carrie), and Angela.

Grandfather of Kristen, Jamey, Kelsee, and Justen. Great-grandfather of Hadleigh and Hazel.

Phil was born in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1939 and grew up in various towns throughout rural Ontario and Quebec.

When his father became a United Church Minister, the family settled in Orono where Phil was to meet his future wife at the local high school.

He courted her by doing things like walking four miles to her farm on Sundays until Doris finally capitulated, accepting his proposal by the banks of Wilmot Creek, and spending 61 years as his wife.

Phil began his 35-year career in education in the late 1950s, when he was just 18 and had completed a six week summer course.

His first job was at a one-room schoolhouse near Leskard where some of the students were almost his age.

Phil went on to teachers’ college in Peterborough, eventually completing a master's in education during summers at Queen's University and the University of Ottawa while Doris held down the fort in Oshawa.

Phil taught throughout Durham Region, and was principal at Raglan/Conlin, Beau Valley, Southwood Park, and West Lynde. From 1985 to 1987, he was principal at a Department of National Defence school in what was then called West Germany.

In the hallways of these schools, he became the beloved "Mr. Long," greeted by students and staff decades later as though they were bumping into someone famous, or a long-lost relative.

Phil was the kind of person who lived life at full tilt. He entered swimming pools by doing cannon balls, creating a tsunami-like effect. When there was a choice between mild, medium, or hot, he'd say (with his trademark twinkle in the eye), "Is "hot" the best you can do?"

He thought nothing of loading his wife and three children into a beat-up Oldsmobile and driving non-stop until they were somewhere with palm trees and an ocean.

The door was always open at the Long household, and the liquor cabinet fully stocked. Anyone who entered was greeted as though the most important person in the world.

"Come on in!" he'd exclaim. "Have a seat!" His circle of friends grew each year, keeping pace with his exuberance for life, which included hockey, Rotary, Asian food, curling, Kiwanis, travel, red wine, golf, poker, and more, so much more, but he never forgot his roots.

Go to places like the village of Quyon, Quebec, in the Ottawa Valley, one of the many stomping grounds of his youth, and see what happens when you mention his name.

Even on his deathbed you could ask "Comment ça va?" and Phil would answer in perfect French. He loved the people of that valley, the music.

He loved any music that got the foot tapping. Well into his 70s, he would pry open the pianos in other people's homes and entertain them with his repertoire, songs such as "Little Brown Jug" or "Oh! Susanna," often containing made-up lyrics that can't be printed here. Such antics forged lifelong friendships with people his children have called "aunt" and "uncle" for as long as they can remember.

Above all, Phil was a man who left his mark, sometimes an indelible one (but let's not get into washroom stories right now). Anywhere he chose to hang his hat, preferably his favourite Irish wool cap, a Phil Long story exists. With his piercing blue eyes, jolly Santa-Claus-like demeanour (and, ahem, belly), and genuine kindness, Phil was the kind of guy you wanted on your team, or at your party.

You wanted him to teach your children, to lead your school. For those who called him son, nephew, brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, or friend, they knew, despite their occasional eye rolling, they'd hit the jackpot. Donations in memory of Phil can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 29 from 12pm to 2pm in the Chapel at ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME, 124 King Street East, Oshawa, followed by a Celebration of Phil's Life at Thornton Arms Pub, 575 Thornton Road North, Oshawa, from 2pm to 5pm.

Pavel Zelman

Listed in

July 25th, 1941 - September 24th, 2022

Pavel died on September 24, 2022 after a brief illness.

He was predeceased by his parents and his sister.

Born on July 25, 1941 in a small town near Prague, in the former Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic, Pavel arrived in Canada on November 11, 1969.

As a child he was very ill with tuberculosis, and it was feared that he might never walk again after his illness.

Surely that prediction impacted Pavel and launched him on a life that he lived to the fullest.
By 1979 Pavel was employed by PPG (Pittsburg Paints) in Whitby in the regional purchasing and distribution office where he specialized in the import of materials used in the production of industrial coatings.

In 1983 he won PPG's first Achievement of Excellence Award for his work in obtaining duty free rulings for PPG's import of materials that resulted in savings to the company of $2.5 million.

Always dedicated to a healthy lifestyle, the boy who might never have walked began in his 40's to run marathons, and eventually ran 46 marathon races, including the famed Boston Marathon.

In retirement Pavel continued his running, but also became active in community activities.

Whether singing tenor in his church choir at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Whitby, or being a community activist in Whitby politics, Pavel was never one to sit still.

One of his proud achievements was his work with community activists to prevent the demolition of R.E. Sennet Public School, resulting in the designation of the school building in 2015 as a building of Historic and Architectural Value.

It is now the home of 360 Insights, an award winning innovation company.

Pavel also volunteered at St. Vincent's Kitchen and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health.

Pavel also loved to travel, whether across Canada with his parents visiting from Prague, or in Europe alone or with friends.

Funeral Mass will be held for Pavel at St. John the Evangelist, 903 Giffard Street, Whitby, on Friday, October 7, 2022 at 11am.
