Laima (Lena) Eugenia (Lelis) Brakas
June 6, 1934 – October 7, 2024

Laima (Lena) Eugenia (Lelis) Brakas passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Toronto, after courageously battling complications from a hiatus hernia and breathing difficulties. Despite years of hospitalizations and surgeries, Laima’s strength and willpower defied the odds, as she repeatedly surprised doctors with her recovery. At the heart of her resilience was her beloved daughter, Rita, with whom she remained connected through frequent video chats, always sharing what truly mattered in life — and their mutual love for food.

Laima’s energy, wit, and passion were incomparable. She often recounted stories of escaping the war, blending excitement with humor that left those listening both captivated and chuckling. Her love for nature, especially trees, was unwavering, and she spent hours gazing at a special white pine outside her window. She was also fond of animals, with many “Fluffy” cats in her life, and more recently, a visiting family dog she affectionately called "Poochie." The bond between them was heartwarming, with Poochie often finding comfort by her bedside.

A devoted Catholic, Laima attended mass regularly at Prisikelimo Parapija (Resurrection Parish) and sang in the Lithuanian Parish choir on College Street for many years. Her love for music, whether playing piano or enjoying classical and country tunes, was evident. Fittingly, her final words were “Hank Williams.”

Laima was born on June 6, 1934, in Taurage, Lithuania, to Petras and Genovaite Lelis. Despite early health challenges and the turmoil of war, she made her way to Toronto, where she lived a simple yet meaningful life, creating a loving home for her daughter while staying connected to nature and her faith.

At Laima’s request, there will be no immediate service, as other family matters are attended to. Her cremated remains will be cherished by her daughter until a Celebration of Life is held at a later date. Laima would have appreciated any gestures of generosity to be directed to the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ Parish (Prisikelimo Parapija, 1 Resurrection Road, Toronto).
