McDONALD, William Robert McDonald -
February 6, 1926 - July 29, 2024

Bob, was born on February 6th, 1926, to father Bert and mother Flo (nee Flint) and sister Peggy.

Bob was raised in Toronto’s west end and attended Annette Public School and Western Technical Commercial High School. Bob studied commercial art and also enjoyed playing sports.

He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in August 1943 and served after training as a Navigator (wireless) with 133 Fighter Squadron.

He was discharged on October 25, 1945, with the rank of Flying Officer.

Bell Canada hired Bob in September 1946 where he met his wife-to-be, Doreen. They were married in 1948. Bob was father to Dale, Nancy Jane (Wayne) and Trish (Alex), grandmother to Meredith, Brent (Michelle), Meghan (Alex), Andrea (Jon), Trevor (Emily), Blair (Jeff) and Reynaldo (Tammy), great grandmother to Joanna, Will, Makaio, Amaris, Myles, Zoe, Rylen, Eleanor and Audrey. Bob and Doreen were married for 75 and a half years.

In 1952, four years after Doreen and Bob were married, Bob became a Christian. It was due to the influence of Doreen and her friends and under the praying influence of Bob’s grandparents and mother-in-law that Bob took this step of faith. Doreen and Bob were baptized at Leaside Baptist Church.

Bob enjoyed his 37 years of work at Bell Canada and eventually held many management positions in Toronto, St John’s, Newfoundland (Avalon Tel) and Montreal. He finished his career as the Section Manager, Organization and Development in Toronto.

Bob retired from Bell Canada in 1983 to accept the position of full-time worker with Don Valley Bible Chapel, a position he held until 1986. Over the years, he was an elder at Leaside Bible Chapel, Don Valley Bible Chapel and Grace Baptist Church in Alliston, ON. He and Doreen enjoyed co-leading youth, young adults and small groups at many of the churches they attended. He also volunteered at Camp Mini-Yo-We and helped develop their Leaders-InTraining (LIT) program and was aptly nicknamed “Coach”.

From 1986-1989, Bob acted as Provincial Director for Child Evangelism Fellowship Ontario.

Next, he served on the pastoral staff of Faith Baptist Church in Huntsville, ON. He eventually fully retired.

Bob was a lifelong learner and enjoyed bible studies, word studies, leadership development and organizational management, especially developing job descriptions. He was never far from a whiteboard that he used for planning and strategizing. His leadership style was to coach and come alongside people to encourage them to become the best they could be. He especially enjoyed interacting with pastors over a cup of coffee or breakfast and wanted to support them, pray with them and encourage them.

Bob was a gifted artist who enjoyed sketching and oil painting. He was a loyal sports fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays. In 1967, he attended the seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals and helped cheer the Leafs on to win the Stanley Cup.

Bob was a man of great faith who loved God and loved people. He deeply loved his family and was a fabulous husband, Dad, Poppa and friend. He had a great sense of humour and an amazing knack for connecting with people easily, making them feel seen and heard. He built genuine relationships with people of all ages and backgrounds. Many family members and caregivers at Bethany Lodge were given nicknames that created a special bond. He was a
grateful man who naturally showed appreciation and thanks.

In the last years of his life, Bob encouraged people by designing and sending his “Little Bird” cards that expressed his love for God and people.

Bob moved to Bethany Lodge in 2017, where he passed away on July 29th , 2024.

Family and friends will be welcomed at BARNES MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME on Saturday August 3rd for a funeral service in the chapel at 12:00 noon, followed by a reception.

PROESTOS, Efthimios (Mike) Proestos

Listed in

PROESTOS, Efthimios (Mike) Proestos   -  passed away on July 29, 2024.

He leaves behind his devoted and loving wife Elizabeth (Betty) of 51 years and daughter, Xenia.

Mike was born on August 24, 1936 in Aigaleo, Greece. In those years, nobody had much but you would never know it from the stories he told about a wonderful childhood, his beloved parents, Polixeni and Yianni, older brother Parasxos (Despina) and younger sister Anastasia (Yianni).

Many of his childhood friends and neighbours never left their street and there were many joyful reunions over the years.

By the early 1970’s, Betty had moved to Canada from Scotland. She and a Greek friend were traveling in Greece, where she met Mike. It wasn’t long before he followed her to Canada and they were married in Toronto in 1973.

For the next three decades, they lived within walking distance of Greektown (Danforth) before moving to the suburbs. He worked as a painter, where he was able to get by on limited English and made life-long friends and koumbari. Xenia was born in 1977 and it was the little family of three from then on.

It was hard not having extended family in Canada but good friends were never far.

Mike’s singular focus for Xenia was education and he was so proud of her when she graduated law school. As for her non-academic endeavours, he never understood why someone who wasn’t being chased would run long distances but he cheered the loudest and was the proudest supporter at every finish line.

He begrudgingly completed many 5km walks and trail runs, crossing the finish lines that happened to be en route to the food and beverages and bypassing the ones that weren’t. This was just one example of what he would do to make his daughter and wife happy. Wearing a kilt on festive occasions was another.

Canada was home because of his wife and daughter but his heart never left Greece and until the end of his days, reminisced about life in Greece and the Greek lifestyle. He loved his family, food, backgammon, the kafenio and soccer (an 80+ year supporter of Panathinaikos).

The highlight of his soccer career was kicking the ball around on a beach in Greece which led to a chance encounter with Pele and a prized photo he described as depicting, “the greatest soccer player of all time. And Pele!” Most of all, he loved being in company. He loved being with people and despite the language barrier, made everyone laugh. His favourite jokes never got old.

After smoking three packs of cigarettes a day for 65 years, allegedly without inhaling, it seemed he was indestructible. After losing his driver’s license to an Alzheimer’s diagnosis five years ago, he managed to navigate the public transit system for the first time in his life without a bus schedule, a cell phone or keys. After a frantic and police-involved search, he was found. Back from the casino, sitting at the kitchen table. The only sign of confusion he showed was in asking, “where have I been? Where have you been?” But, eventually, the Alzheimer’s and a broken hip got the better of him. He was brave and strong and never complained. He was 87 and lived a full life but it was still too soon.

There are many worthy charities.

PURDY, Lenore Ethel (nee EATON)   -  September 7, 1928, North York, Ontario – July 28, 2024, Windsor, Ontario Daughter of Roy and Pearl (Walker) Eaton, and the youngest among a large extended family.

Lenore grew up in Toronto and Hamilton, with happy summers on the Burlington farm of a much- loved aunt and uncle.

A gifted vocalist from an early age, Lenore sang in choirs through much of her life. Her marriage to United Church minister, Lawrence (Lawrie) Purdy in 1950, started a partnership full of love and laughter that lasted 48 years.

Lenore's warmth made the Purdy home a welcoming space for the family's many friends, both in Canada, and during four years with the church in Trinidad and Tobago.

Lenore thrived in the often overlooked job of clergy spouse, an essential, albeit unpaid, anchor of the congregations they served.

Throughout her life, Lenore's first thought was for other people, not only for family and her many dear friends, but also for the caregivers and staff who helped her as her needs increased.

She left this life peacefully, secure in the knowledge that she had both loved well and been deeply loved.

Lenore will be greatly missed by the family she treasured: children, Jennifer (John Palmer), Joanna (Peter Bell) and Lawrence (Pippa Lawson); grandchildren, Aaron Palmer (Amy Palmer), Lydia Palmer, Joseph Bell (Kathleen Burzycki) and Justin Bell (Victoria Maria); and great-grandchildren, Ophelia, Imogen and Lysander Palmer.
