Unfortunately, taken away at a young age from her mother during the war, she laboured in Germany until the war ended. She was unable to return to Poland and therefore, would never see her mother again. She met her husband, Stefan Jagoda (pre-deceased) shortly after the war and made plans with him to emigrate to Canada. In 1950 after weeks at sea with her young son, Ben, she landed at Halifax and took another long journey to Montreal, this time by train. She reunited with her husband and the family settled in the Oshawa area.In 1952 daughter Irene was born and in 1958 son Les was born.In 1962, the family sponsored her sister Wanda and later in November 1967 the family managed to sponsor her brother Jozef and his family of seven. The two families lived together for one year with 12 people sharingthe one washroom. In 1973, celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary she returned to Poland for the first time since the war. She would not return to Poland again until 1999.Sophie worked at the Genosha Hotel for a year before joining VS Services as a food service worker at the GM Main Plant before transferring to North Oshawa Truck Plant before retiring in 1989. She enjoyed her retirement years spending time with her brother and sister and their families. She enjoyed outdoors especially gardening as well as knitting, crocheting, and cooking. Well known for her love of sweets, she never said no to a cheesecake she met. She enjoyed the basic and simple things in life and always had a kind word for everyone. Her faith was very strong and she was one of the original parishioners of St Hedwig’s and attended mass regularly. Everyone enjoyed listening to her life stories, her sense of humour, and were fascinated with her uncanny knack of remembering everyone’s birthday or anniversary.Sophie was friendly, kind to everyone, and put others first before herself.
