Elizabeth “Betty” May Kirkness

Elizabeth passed away at Amica Whitby on October 11, 2023 at the age of 88.

Predeceased by her parents Roy and May Hulton, and by her husband Merrill Ralph Kirkness.

She was a sister of Ken and Ron Hulton.

Elizabeth was the proud mother of Ray, Norm and Pauline as well as the grandmother of Scott, Andy, Colleen, Tamara, Ian, Mikhayla, Haileigh and loving great grandmother of Aurora, Ben and Eleanor.

She was born in Toronto, Ontario on July 11, 1935.

Elizabeth spent her formative years in the Oakwood and Rogers Road area where she developed many friendships largely through her neighborhood friends and family, church and the Christian Endeavour group that she belonged to as well as Rainbow for Girls.

Elizabeth attended Shaw Business College and upon graduation, became a Secretary for Dunwoody’s accounting and in 1957 she wed the love of her life Merrill.

She left the 9 to 5 life in 1960 and devoted herself to raising her family until the election of our 18th Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney when she was offered and accepted a staff position for former Member of Parliament, Pauline Browes.

Elizabeth held that position until the government switched parties in 1993. Her tenure in that position was certainly the proudest time that she spent in her working career.

Outside of her work life and family, Elizabeth held office in the local UCW and volunteered with several organizations including Zion Wexford United Church, the Wexford Hockey Association to name a couple of organizations that she assisted.

In her spare time, she was an avid card player – Euchre, Bridge and she was a Cribbage shark. She always loved to be involved in a conversation with family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling, mostly within Canada’s borders where she and Merrill visited every Province, and most on more than one occasion.

They briefly lived in Charlottetown in 1963 and temporarily relocated their family to Thunder Bay for 2 years in the 70’s.

Elizabeth enjoyed Camping and eventually, she and Merrill became cottage owners, first in Bobcaygeon and finally at Crystal Lake near Kinmount Ontario.

Finally, Elizabeth was a devoted and very loving Wife, Mother, Sister and friend that was much loved and will be forever missed.

Friends may call at THORNTON CEMETERY and FUNERAL CENTRE, 1200 Thornton Road North, Oshawa, (South of Taunton Road and off of Dryden Blvd, 905-579-6787) on Saturday, October 28, 2023 for visitation from 11 am until time of Celebration of Life in the Chapel at 12 noon.

Eric, better known to all as “Stan”, in his 96th year, on Thursday October 5, 2023, at home, after a courageous battle, quietly slipped away.

He will be missed forever by the family he loved so much; his wife of close to 68 yrs (October 9th) Hilda and daughters Beverley (Michael Press) and Jane.

He was the much loved “Standad” to Christopher, Eric, Connor, Graeme (Madeline Alexander), Kyle (Heidi Dienesch) and Cameron. Great “Standad” to Charlotte and Iver.

Stan was born in London, England, youngest of five, emigrating to Canada with Hilda in 1957. He was a proud member of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force for 30 years, working in 51 & 52 Divisions, then Bail and Parole, before retiring as a Detective in 1989.

In his retirement he devoted the rest of his life to his family and friends.

Special thanks to the many Personal Support Workers Kim, Shila, Veronica, Vinette, and the many, many more who took care of Stan, as well as Gerry from Falby Court, Dr Ou-Hingwan and the Doctors and Nurses from Oncology and Ajax-Pickering Palliative Care.

Enely suddenly passed away at her home on October 5, 2023, at the age of 67.

She will be sadly missed by her beloved children Charity, Kristen, Bryan and their father John.

Devoted grandmother of Ayden, Madeline, Jayse, and Alexa.

She was the dear sister of Maret Moffat and proud aunt of Matthew and Brennan.

Enely was a natural artist from a young age, loved to play cards with her family and had great joy and passion in dancing.

She taught her family the fun in having a bit or a lot of competitive spirit!

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023 from 10 – 11 a.m. at ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME .

A Memorial Service will follow in the Chapel at 11 a.m.

Eileen most loved her time with her family and being involved in her Church Community. Her passion for handicrafts and her love of travel will be remembered by all who knew her.

It is with heavy hearts, the family of Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Hachey (nee Gray) announces her passing which occurred on October 1, 2023 at Hillsdale Terraces Nursing Home in Oshawa Ontario, surrounded by her children.

Betty was born in Saint John, NB on September 15, 1943, daughter of the late James Gray and Genevieve Cromwell.

Betty was survived by her four children Kim, Chris (Karen), Leah (Wayne) and Kelly.

Predeceased by her two sons Tony and Dana.

Betty worked as a PSW for many years and loved working with the seniors.

Betty’s passion was her family and friends, she loved playing her guitar and doing karaoke. She also loved every and any animal that she came in contact with. Betty leaves behind many grandchildren and great grandchildren that love to call her G-Nan, also several nieces and nephews who considered her like a second mom.

Betty was also predeceased by her two grandsons Jamie Smith and Terry Morrell, also her siblings Bob, Donald, Jean, Judy and Sandra.

The family would also like to thank the amazing staff of Hillsdale Terraces, Cedar Heights unit for all the kindness and compassion they gave to Betty and her family during her time in their care.

There will be no service or funeral for Betty.

At this time there will be a celebration of life at a later date, in the lieu of flowers the family would appreciate if you would make a donation to your local animal shelter.

Passed away peacefully at the Pembroke Regional Hospital on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at the age of 91 years.

She was predeceased by her parents, Bruce and Elva Montgomery, and her husband, Robert Bruce Taylor. Jean was a loving mother to children Walter (Linda), Lawrence (Denise Davis), Neil (Janice), Annette, Colette (Baillie Carleton), Pauline Dueck (Weldon), Francine Taylor-Gobeil (Bernard), Kevin Taylor (Beth Parks).

She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Sean (Ginger), Andrea Remmert (Trevor) and Lindsay Webster (Malcolm); Nathan (Elizabeth), Jeremy (Fiona Hossack) and Bryn Gunning (Brad); Logan Orser (Taylor), Keenan Lukasewich (Trent), Connor (Madison) and Hunter; Stephen (Rebecca), Colin (Lauren) and Joel (Liz Dueck Perez), Duecks; Sophie and Jérôme, Gobeils; and Sam and Sadie, Taylor-Parks.

Jean was great-grandmother to Ariel, Kaitlin, Bennett and Taylor; Violet, April, Cooper and Tilly Dee; Barrett, Lauren and Enna; and Isaac, Everly, Sophia and Simon.

Jean will also be held dear in the hearts of her friends, nieces and nephews.

As an only child, Jean grew up on a farm on the 7th Concession of Darlington Township, now the Town of Clarington. She married and raised her own family just down the road on Hollowview Farm.

Jean was recognized with Volunteer Awards by the Province of Ontario, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Clarington Older Adults Association and the Solina Community.

The family will receive friends at the Eldad Church, Solina, on Saturday, October 14th, from 1 to 2:30 pm. A Service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held in the Church at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. David Sherwin officiating. Cremation has taken place. Interment of Jean’s ashes will follow immediately after the service.

In memory of Jean, donations to the Eldad United Church or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

Passed away on September 30, 2023, in Port Perry, Ontario, at the age of 83.

Beloved wife of the late Avard Fulton. Devoted mother to Dan, Matt, and Sarah, and loving mother-in-law to Elli, Susie, and Colin.

Cherished sister of Isla Hyde and the late Brenda Edgar. Adored “Glammy” to her seven grandchildren, Kathleen, Trevor, Alyssa, Abby, Olivia, Rachel, and Adam.

Steadfast caregiver to her many four-legged companions over the years, most notably her seven beloved Newfoundland dogs. Ena was a kind, gentle, and loving soul.

She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Ena’s family would like to thank the nurses and doctors who cared for her at Stevenson Memorial Hospital, and all the health care workers and volunteers at Oak Ridges Hospice in Port Perry, whose compassion and guidance were a balm to us throughout this most difficult time.

In keeping with Ena’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family celebration and interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Ena’s family would be honoured by donations in support of Oak Ridges Hospice, the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation, or the Humane Society.
