July 10, 1936 - January 30, 2023
Tom, 86, passed away peacefully on January 30th, 2023, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, surrounded by his loving family.
He is predeceased by Johanna (Joyce) Neeltje Hill, his wife of 61 years.
The oldest of three children, Tom was born July 10th, 1936, to Sarah Louise Basinger and William Edward Hill in Edmonton, Alberta.
The family moved to England to be close to his paternal grandparents when Tom was two, and they remained there until shortly after the birth of his first sister, Carolynne Grace.
When Tom was four, he returned to Canada with his mother and sister, while his father remained in London to serve in the Home Guard for the entirety of WW2.
They remained in Edmonton until 1942, when Tom and his sister went to live with their maternal grandparents in Oshawa, Ontario, and their mother returned to England to be with their father. The family was reunited in 1946 and had grown by one with the addition of Tom's second sister, Shirley Anne.
Together again, the family built a life in Oshawa, before later moving to Port Whitby where Tom met Joyce. They were married on June 24th, 1961, and by 1970, they had established their home on a hobby farm with three children. Tom took great pride in chopping wood for the stove that heated the whole house, and he often fondly reminisced about the dogs and ponies the family kept. He was also very proud of his yearly crop of potatoes that he would share with family and friends.
Tom was a proud member of the "Fighting Fourth" Oshawa Scout Group and grew up spending many happy days at Camp Samac. This love of camping continued into adulthood, and he led his family on many road trips across northern Ontario to camp and fish in provincial parks.
After a long career at General Motors in accounting and tabulation (which later became the computer room), Tom retired in 1991 and spent his time working around the home. Along with his wife, he was a member of the Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church Choir, the St. Paul's Presbyterian Church Choir, and the Audley Community Club, and he always looked forward to hosting the annual corn roast.
Tom is predeceased by his parents and sister, Carolynne (Ron Pine – predeceased). He is survived by his three children, Kathy (John Penny), Ted (Jacqueline Gold), and Susan (Dave Gunhouse); three grandchildren, Caitlin, Sarah, and Trevor; and sister, Shirley (Ken Simpson).
Donations in Tom's memory can be sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
