In Loving Memory of Michael John Clayton

Born July 26, 1961, Mike passed away peacefully at home with his wife Sharon by his side on Friday, June 28, 2024. Loving husband for 21 years. Much-loved son of John “Jack” (deceased) and Margaret. Much-loved brother to Peter (Jennifer) and Kim. Loving uncle to Taylor, Braeden, Sarah, and Emma.

Mike retired in 2020 after 32 years of teaching in secondary schools in Durham. Teaching was his passion, which led him to a career in education. He loved the challenges of educating the next generation in a safe and nurturing environment. Mike is remembered by countless students and colleagues as a life-changing influence. Mike had a great sense of humour and believed in having fun in everything he did.

Another passion was rugby. It was in Mike’s blood as a player and coach. He played rugby at Anderson CVI, York University, and Oshawa Vikings. After that, Mike coached rugby at the high school, club, and rep levels. Most rugby players remember his favourite place to stand was in the in-goal area.

A great friend, coach, and mentor to many, Mike lived by the code of Clayton’s four things:

Don’t whine, don’t complain, don’t make excuses.
There is no substitution for doing the simple things well.
Play in the present.
It’s all about how you finish.
We would like to thank the staff at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the Durham Regional Cancer Centre, and Lakeridge Health Oshawa for their care and compassion for Mike, specifically Dr. Marta Davidson, Dr. Vasanthamohan, and Peggy Chen NP, among many others.

In lieu of flowers, we request donations to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the Durham Regional Cancer Centre, or Lakeridge Health Oshawa.

A visitation will take place at Mount Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery, 21 Garrard Road, Whitby on Thursday, July 4, 2024, from 6-8 p.m. and on Friday, July 5, 2024, from 12-2 p.m. with a Celebration of Life service to follow.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Margaret E. Houston on June 26, 2024, at Lakeridge Health in Oshawa, Ontario. Born on May 23, 1945, in Dryden, Ontario, Margaret was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose warmth touched everyone she met.

Margaret’s greatest joy was her family. Like the widow in the parable of the widow’s mite, she gave selflessly, even when she had very little to give, ensuring her family never went without. Her love and generosity were boundless, a testament to her unwavering faith and devotion. Margaret was a strong and compassionate listener, always ready to offer support and guidance to her family.

She found joy in the simple pleasures of life: reading thrillers, tending to her vibrant flowers and gardens, and feeding the birds. Even in her wheelchair, she zipped through life with spirited zest, navigating her smartphone like a pro and capturing breathtaking photographs of her favorite flowers. Her love for Snoopy and Woodstock brought smiles to her golden years.

Margaret’s deep Catholic faith was her foundation, providing her strength and solace. She cherished her church community and embraced every moment spent in fellowship. Her parting words to her children were, “I love you, dear,” a reminder of the immense love she held for her family.

She is survived by her children, Robert, Rhandey (Paula), Richie, William (Tricia), and Margo (Tim); her grandchildren, Grace, Michelle, and Kaija; and her great-grandchildren, Abby and Connor. She was predeceased by her daughter Brigette in 1961, her husband, William J. Houston, in 2000, and her son Michael in 2011.

Margaret’s legacy of love, resilience, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Palestine – Hands for Charity in Margaret’s name.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at W.C. Town Funeral Home (110 Dundas St E, Whitby, ON L1N 2H7). The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Family Parish (91 Ribblesdale Dr, Whitby, ON L1N 6Z3).

Mom, we love you, dear.

FEBRUARY 3, 1973 – JUNE 15, 2024

On June 15th, 2024, Michelle passed away peacefully surrounded by love. Michelle was known for her keen wit, humour, her deep compassion and her empathy.

She took her strongest attributes and made it her career by bringing laughter and comfort to others while caring for them in their time of need. Live music and the Blue Jays were her favourite way to spend time with her friends.

The only advantage of being told that you have a short time left here is the opportunity to spend those days with the people you love. It’s hours of cuddling with your children, watching the movies that brought you joy, retelling of stories and saying all the things you want to say to each other.

Michelle was predeceased by her loving parents, Pat and Perry, her brother and best friend, Colin, and many other family and friends she deeply missed. It brought her peace that she would be reunited with them.

To paraphrase something her mom said to her in a dream days before she passed, she was happy to be going, she was sad to be going.

Michelle is survived by her dear children Jacob (Jennifer), Aaron, Hannah and the absolute joy of her last year her granddaughter Violet, her stepfather Robert (Kathy), her siblings, Arlene, Nico (Lorne), Sarah, Garry, and Emma, her grandmother, Helen, her “Ant” Sherry, her sister in laws Angie, Nadine, and Alyssa, her lifelong friends, Shelley, Michelle, and Melanie, and many much-loved nieces and nephews.

Sweet girl, we will meet again on the other side and enjoy the Soup Du Jour together.
