The community has lost one of the good guys .

Walter Alexander Cannings, better known as Al, was born on July 30, 1938 in Toronto to the late Walter and Nellie Cannings.

Alex was predeceased by his first wife Sandy and survived by his sister Eileen.

Love entered his heart again later in life when he went on a blind date and fell madly in love with Louise whom he married and remained with until his death.

In total their union included Al’s son Paul (Bonnie), daughter Joanne (Gordon), two step children, Leanne (Gary) and Gord (Lesley), 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. There was always a lot of love to go around.

He was a steamfitter by trade, spending 48 years enjoying his craft in various locations ending his career at General Motors.

Al passed away peacefully in his home in the wee hours of the morning on June 4, 2023 with his loving family by his side. Cancer is an unforgiving beast.

Special thanks go out to the doctors and nurses on the second floor of Lakeridge Health and to Morris Funeral Home in Bowmanville for all the care they provided.

Born on December 26, 1956, and raised in Kingston Jamaica, Wayne lived next door to his future wife Heather.

Wayne immigrated to Canada, living with his sister in 1976.

Wayne returned to Jamaica to marry his sweetheart in 1978, before returning to Canada to begin their new life.

Wayne’s biggest passion was his family; where he was known for his silly sense of humor, mischief, and tickles; as well as being one of its most fierce defenders. Known to be a competitive person, Wayne loved watching motorcar racing, the Maple Leaf’s, and anything Jamaican sport related.

He also loved music and would spend many a day singing away to his favorite oldies (much to his family’s chagrin).

Wayne is survived by his wife Heather, three children Marcel (Sharon), Justine (Jon), and Daniel (Marianne), and four grandchildren Joshua, Nylah, Finn and Nyomie.

Wayne DePass left this earth on May 30th, 2023, to be received in glory.

He passed away peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre while surrounded by family.

A public Celebration of Life will be held at Bayfair Baptist Church on June 7th at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception.

Wayne’s family requests that donations be made in Wayne’s honour to Diabetes Canada or Ethnos Canada, in lieu of flowers.

For those travelling to be at the service the Holiday Inn Express (180 Consumers Drive, Whitby) or Homewood Suites by Hilton (600 Beck Crescent, Ajax) are convenient options for accommodation.
