Died suddenly at home on Saturday, June 24, 2023 in his 90th year.

Predeceased by his loving wife Helen Smith Maxwell (2002) and by his father Hendrik and mother Antonia.

Father to Ken (Cathy) and John (Pat) and brother to Ralph of Courtice.

Lovingly remembered as 'Gramps' by grandchildren Christopher (d. 2019), Jay, Janet (Mark), Lee (Candice), Kristen (Nick), Eric (Jess), Doug (Lindsay) and 15 great grandchildren.

Step Gramps to Angela and Shane.

Dad emigrated from Holland with his family shortly after WW11 and lived for a short time in a logging camp in Quebec.

A move to Ontario shortly thereafter, he worked at many jobs to help support the family and resided in a few Ontario small towns. Landing in Oshawa, he met the love of his life, Helen Maxwell an immigrant from Scotland.

They married in September of 1956, purchased a home in 1958 and acquired their Canadian citizenship. Their two boys came shortly thereafter to complete their family. Dad remained in the family home until his passing.

Dad had a 35-year career with General Motors Oshawa as a Salaried Pension Administrator. Once retired, Dad and Mom travelled to many places in their little camper enjoying every minute and taking pictures, lots of pictures!

Dad also volunteered with Meals On Wheels and donated to numerous other charities. He spent years with the Kiwanis Club of Canada and also acted in the Presidents role for Durham Region Sydenham chapter.

His love of music was clearly a passion as he was a member of the St. Andrews and St. Stephens choirs as well as a time with the Durham Philharmonic choir. It is easy to say he always had a song in his heart.

Although Dad wasn't born in Canada, he was so grateful to be Canadian, cherishing the freedom of this country and loving every minute of his life spent here.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother and “Oma” on June 21, 2023 at Hillsdale Terraces, with family at her side.

Ali lived a productive and fulfilling like for almost 96 years.

Ali was predeceased by her husband Martin in 2009, having been constant life companions since grade school.

The proverbial “message in a bottle”/love letter was cast from the ship which took Martin to Indonesia at the age of 16, later to be found on the shores of France and returned by the French police to the Dutch police and then forwarded it to Ali.

She said “yes”! and they immigrated to Canada in 1951, eventually establishing a greenhouse business in north Oshawa.

Her sweetness and compassion were reflected in her love of nature and animals. She enjoyed hearty laughter, particularly with her son Martin and her sisters Johanna and Riet.

Ali graciously accepted her new home at Hillsdale in 2017 and was clearly beloved by both staff and fellow residents.

Ali will be missed by all who knew her, but especially by her sons Martin (Henrietta) and Paul (Alice) of Apopka Florida, grandsons Clint (Jenn), Ryan (Carly), Chris (Kalea) and granddaughter Ali (Graham).

She was a loving great-Oma to Drew, Anna. Leah, Nathaniel and Kyra, as well as Mackenzie and Ethan. She is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews, both here and in the Netherlands.

A celebration of life event was held at Mount Lawn Funeral Home in Whitby for family and close friends.

Memorial donations made to the World Vision would be appreciated.

The family extends heartfelt thanks for the exceptional care given to Ali and all of us by the staff of Hillsdale Terraces.

Your kindness will never be forgotten.

Anne Marie Carpette

Anne Marie Carpette

Listed in

July 20, 1944 - June 12, 2023

Anne Marie was the eldest daughter of George & Nellie Carpette. Born and raised in San Fernando Trinidad, Anne Marie subsequently migrated to Canada where she spent the greater part of her adult life.

Auntie Anne, as she was affectionately called was a sister to Cecil, Angela and the late Gloria, Ignatius “Eggie” and Leon.

She also nurtured her adopted daughters Paula and Cheryl from a very young age and would always ensure that they were well taken care of.

Paula eventually migrated to Canada to join her and this bond could not have been greater. Cheryl remained in Trinidad, however, she ensured that she was never without and her love was felt. Apart from Paula and Cheryl, Anne Marie was a mother to a number of children including Wayne and Nigel.

She also leaves to mourn grandchildren Jennyse, Carlene, Celene and Jeneil, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and very close friends.

Anne Marie was always known for her ‘sweet hand’ with baking and cooking. It was especially an exciting time at home when Christmas and special holidays were near, for we knew those special tasty dishes were being prepared.

She was committed to Our Lord Jesus Christ as well as her job at Bayer Pharmaceuticals where she worked for many years until retirement.

The extreme cold and snow never keep her commitments of attending mass nor going to work.

Arrangements with McEachnie Funeral Home.

We were so honoured to have such a special angel as Anne Marie in our lives.

Soar high Auntie Anne, you will certainly be missed by all!.
